Why this exists
Independence is not a promotion. It is a different role.
Most resources begin with an ABN, an hourly rate and a checklist. This guide begins one step earlier: whether you are ready to carry the responsibility that used to sit around you.
It does not tell you to leave your employer. It does not promise higher income. It helps you slow the decision down before momentum makes it for you.
About the author
Eight years of experience behind every page.
I began working in mental health and disability support at the age of 20. Over the past eight years, I have worked in large organisations, delivered frontline and independent support, and built an independent NDIS provider.
Too often, participants are treated as a shift to be filled or a source of revenue rather than as people with individual needs, preferences and goals. Requests can be met with promises that are never followed through, while communication and continuity fall short of the standard participants deserve.
Putting myself in the participant's position made the gap impossible to ignore. A service intended to reduce anxiety and make daily life easier can sometimes do the opposite. I created this manual to help independent support workers build services around compassion, clear communication, reliability and genuine accountability from the beginning.
